Two iPhones are dead

How long are you using your iPhone: 4 months
My wife and I both bought the 4gig Iphone the first week of August. Mine started acting erratic and would not charge in mid October and AT&T told me to take it to the Apple store where they replaced it in about 10 min.
On Nov 4th my wife’s phone locked out of the network. The local Apple store was out of the 4 gig phones and refused to give a loaner or replace it with an 8 gig even though we had paid the same price as it is now selling for. They informed us we would have to wait a week or more to have one shipped to us. We escolated to the manager and they discovered one at another mall 30 miles away (after claiming they had checked it earlier in the day). We drove there and after a 70 min wait in the cue we once again escolated to the manager and got the new phone 15 min later.
What are the odds that 2 phones from the same household would die within a couple of months of purchase and that those phones are a model that was discontinued weeks after hitting the market? I can’t help but wonder if Apple discovered a flaw and rather than do a recall they dropped the 4gig version and are replacing it with modified versions as they come in. I have not had any problems with the replacement. It would also explain the shortage of 4gig phones as they should have had a surplus after dropping it from distribution. It is a good device that has some big shortcomings in areas of ringtones, no games, no file storage or access, and most of all, customer service. 2 phones in one household die and they make us drive 60 miles round trip and wait 90 min to get a replacement. That sucked.
